Description
Flight simulators, futuristic space shooters and combat flight games, though different in their approach, are fundamentally one and the same. Gatherings Wings of War falls into the latter category, and sees players taking to the skies whilst attempting to complete a veritable bestiary of World War I scenarios. Though an action-based video game, Wings of War also has significant historical value, detailing events of the first world war in convincing fashion. In addition, Wings of War stands out from a crowd of World War flight sims by allowing players to assume control of a rookie pilot and progress in a manner they see fit. In many ways, its a free roaming experience. Over time, players can improve their command over legendary aircraft as well as their combat skills, earning medals and new ranks throughout the adventure. Theres an array of optional side-quests in which players can seek fortune and glory, and with an authentic play mechanic, a virtual pilots success will be down to the individuals own skill. A little luck is sometimes welcome though. The games control method is respectable, but a flight yoke peripheral of some sort is advised, and helps level a rather steep learning curve by offering more accurate and more accessible controls. Visually the game is impressive too. Nearby aircraft are suitably detailed, the view from the sky is convincing, explosions are often spectacular and the game runs smoothly. All in all, its a fair attempt at a flight game from Gathering that has depth, good looks and good gameplay.
